Food security is a precondition for people to be able to lead a healthy and active life. The access to basic food is not only a fundamental human right, but also a central task of the Red Cross.
A household is considered food secure if its members do not go hungry or have to fear malnutrition. The hunger crises have worsened in many parts of the world, especially in Africa.
The causes of hunger and malnutrition are manifold: poverty, armed conflicts, natural disasters and the consequences of climate change often limit access to food and sources of income.
