Securing nutrition worldwide

Food security is a precondition for people to be able to lead a healthy and active life. The access to basic food is not only a fundamental human right, but also a central task of the Red Cross.

A household is considered food secure if its members do not go hungry or have to fear malnutrition. The hunger crises have worsened in many parts of the world, especially in Africa.

The causes of hunger and malnutrition are manifold: poverty, armed conflicts, natural disasters and the consequences of climate change often limit access to food and sources of income.

Emergency aid

Thanks to its global network of national Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the German Red Cross is able to respond immediately to hunger crises and quickly provide food and drinking water to people in acute emergency situations.

Long-term projects

With long-term projects we support communities that are particularly at risk of food shortages to help them develop a stable system for their food security. The goal for them is to be able cope with shortages themselves even in difficult situations.

Disaster preparedness

Natural disasters can destroy entire harvests and livelihoods in a very short space of time. therefore the GRC focusses on anticipatory action and projects for climate adaptation so that the population is prepared for food shortages – whether due to droughts, floods or other challenges.
In agricultural training courses, the GRC imparts valuable knowledge on how people can cultivate their fields in a more climate-resilient and sustainable way. They also receive necessary tools, equipment, seeds and fertiliser.
