The German Red Cross assists all those who are particularly affected by crises and whose livelihoods are threatened. Providing them with fast and purposeful assistance requires efficient coordination of aid and close cooperation with local Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
The first people to provide assistance after a disaster or during an armed conflict are those on the ground. Thanks to the volunteers and staff of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, emergency relief can usually begin immediately. In larger emergencies, the respective national Red Cross or Red Crescent Society requests additional assistance.
Within a few days, the situation is assessed and the needs are determined together with the affected people. On this basis, an emergency action plan is drawn up that specifies who will provide what kind of assistance, when and where. Such plans are developed according to standards. There are also standards for the type of assistance provided. Relief supplies must meet a certain quality. This applies to food, tents, and everyday items as well as hygiene items, drinking water supplies, and medical services.
In addition to the emergency action plan, the IFRC also publishes a so-called appeal to provide the material and funds necessary for the relief operation.
