More than 120 million people worldwide are displaced – due to crises, conflicts, and disasters, exacerbated by climate change. The German Red Cross is providing humanitarian emergency relief to refugees in many crisis regions around the world.
Within the international Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the GRC works closely with its affiliates and partners in the affected countries. The goal is to provide needs-based humanitarian assistance and protection to internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees. This includes basic supplies of water, food, shelter, and medicine, as well as activities to secure livelihoods and disaster preparedness.
The GRC is committed to identifying and assessing rapidly emerging humanitarian needs at an early stage in order to support the respective national Red Cross or Red Crescent Societies more quickly and effectively. These societies provide vital and ongoing assistance on the ground, making an important social contribution—particularly by improving the living conditions of vulnerable families and individuals.
Nevertheless, many people are still forced to undertake long and dangerous journeys in search of safety. The German Red Cross therefore supports numerous national Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in providing aid along migration routes, including across borders, to ensure continuous and dignified assistance for people on the move.
