What we look for

Missions with the German Red Cross vary from country to country as well as from project to project. Likewise, the professional background of German Red Cross delegates varies tremendously depending on the situation. Contrary to popular belief, Red Cross delegates are not limited to the medical profession.

There is a whole range of professionals - such as disaster risk reduction specialists capacity builders, project managers, water/sanitation and construction engineers, livelihood and nutrition experts, administration, accountants, logistics experts, or public relations delegates - essential in ensuring that operations function smoothly and according tot he needs.
Being flexible and diplomatic is a must. Candidates are required to work in close cooperation with Red Cross or Red Crescent colleagues and local authorities. They have to adapt to ever changing needs as new situation arise in the field. The qualities sought go beyond mere professional skills.

  • Minimum Requirements

    • Ability and agreement to adhere to the Red Cross Red Crescent Fundamental Principles.
    • University degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
    • Oral and written fluency in English, any additional language is of advantage
    • Previous international work experience in a developing country
    • Minimum 2-3 years work experience in a relevant field
    • Valid driver’s license with ability to drive a standard transmission
    • Valid First Aid certification
    • Excellent physical and mental health with the ability to complete a thorough medical screening process
    • Ability to successfully complete a thorough background / security check
    • Computer skills with demonstrated ability in MS Office products
  • In addition, all candidates must demonstrate the following skills and abilities:

    • Ability to work effectively in multi cultural environments
    • Ability to work independently and as a team member
    • Ability to work effectively in high stress, insecure and volatile environments for extended periods
    • Ability to adapt to constantly changing environments
    • Proven leadership skills with a strong ability to build and manage effective teams
    • A strong sense of initiative with excellent problem solving and decision making skills
  • Preferred Requirements

    • 2-3 years international experience working for a humanitarian aid organization in a developing country
    • Fluency in additional languages such as French, Spanish, Arabic, Mandarin
    • Previous experience working or volunteering with the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement
    • Meet the requirements of the profiles of an ICRC or Federation delegate
    • Specialty in one of the core strategic  areas of the German Red Cross:  Health, Organizational Development, Disaster Risk Reduction, Shelter, Water/Sanitation
