Disaster preparedness in Palestinian Territories: The community is prepared

In the Palestinian Territories the German Red Cross (GRC) supports the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) with the establishment of a community-based disaster preparedness programme. Thanks to this programme 15.000 households in 15 communities shall be prepared for natural as well as for manmade disasters.

Not only are people in the Palestinian Territories affected by the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict but also by the impacts of natural disasters. The Palestinian Territories are indeed a high-risk area and especially prone to earthquakes, flash floods and tsunamis. Therefore the population has to be specifically well-prepared to different kinds of disaster scenarios. Preparing for a smooth evacuation, knowledge and skills in First Aid as well as small mitigation measures  are essential criteria in terms of disaster preparedness and secure the survival of the affected population in case of emergency.

Help for self-help

Together with the PRCS,  GRC  supports a community-based disaster risk reduction project in 15 communities in the areas of Hebron, Bethlehem and Dair Al Balah. Through the project, the selected communities are for example learning how to organize and to manage evacuation measures by themselves, in case of an emergency. Furthermore, mitigation activities, that are independently planned and implemented by the communities themselves, such as the equipment of additional emergency centers, contribute to minimize the disaster risk in the respective communities.

First aid training saves human lives

Besides disaster risk reduction, First Aid is an important criterion to prepare the communities for different disaster scenarios. Hence local action teams and First-Aid-workers are trained in the frame of the project, in order to be able toensure a quick and qualified medical emergency care. In addition to the community members, GRC particularly focuses on pupils and teachers in the project communities. Because in case of a disaster children are often the most vulnerable.

In total, more than 36.000 people benefit from the project that is supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and by GRC donations.
