Support, develop, strengthen – long term commitment of the GRC

Sometimes the disaster appears gradually and is not visible – because the disaster is not only caused by extreme meteorological effects, but rather by poor infrastructure or by a lack of knowledge about risks and about how processes are connected to each other. Here the German Red Cross takes action and supports with targeted development projects.

  • Disaster risk reduction – a must in countries with regular natural events

The GRC supports on all levels, locally, regionally and nationally, by building up structures and capacities for disaster risk reduction. Adapting to the effects of climate change is for many people essential for survival. The GRC assists in implementing measures to minimise risks (mitigation), create structures and foster preparedness on a local level.

  • Water-sanitation and hygiene, the basis for a healthy life – our WASH projects

Access to clean water is the basis for a healthy life and is a human right since August 2010. More than one billion of people have no access to clean water. Therefore, the GRC builds infrastructure to supply people with safe water, with water for agricultural purposes, builds latrines and at the same time informs people about health risks related to lack of good hygiene practice and about appropriate hygiene measures.

  • Medical aid – our health projects

To promote health, the GRC focuses on the necessary, basic health care, especially community level. In this field, the GRC focuses on preventive health care, on the health of mother and child, on first aid, prevention and control of epidemics as well as blood donation.

  • Food and income – the basis for a regulated life

In many regions the German Red Cross supports the local population with measures for food security and to generate an income. This also includes the improvement of agriculture and gardening as well as the generation of new sources of income for families. With this commitment, the GRC importantly contributes to secure the livelihood of the people.

  • Safe housing and social infrastructure – another important living condition

In the reconstruction period after a disaster event, the building of shelters is a basic need for many people to protect their families. Social infrastructure like schools, health stations and community buildings are also important places for the existence of a community. The GRC supports families and communities in building infrastructure adapted to climate change and natural disasters. Training in adapted construction methods contributes to capacity building.

  • Strengthening the local partners – partners in place can help quickly

The GRC supports its partners in building their own capacities and competencies. In this way, quick and qualified help and services to the local population are promoted.

By this, the GRC contributes to build the civil society in its partner countries and fosters long term development.

  • Underprivileged, but not left alone – support for children and women

The needs of women and children, as weak and often underprivileged parts of the population, find special attention in all GRC projects. For example, the Red Cross supports projects for street-children and education of youth. Aimed promotion of women is used where the position of women needs strengthening, so that they better participate in their families and communities and have opportunities to play a role in the development.
